Burdfield Ancestry

The Burdfield family name can be traced back to the time when William the Conquerer brought many Knights over to England from France.  According to some historical records, Robert de Bordeville (sometimes written Bordeuille) held the lands of “Lancing and Hoo”.  Evidence of a farm at Lancing is written about in documents held at Lancing College, and is a farm, now called Burwells.

Later in the 1300s, is evidence of a Robro de Bordeville paying taxes on land at Eatons.  The land straddles the boundary between Ashurst and Henfield, which meant he had to make two payments.  Eatons is still there.  A beautiful medieval farmouse.

Later in the 1500s we have Henry Bordeville, whose wife Jone contributed to the Lady Chapel in Henfield Church.

The next significant date is during the 1600s when a William Burdvile arrives in Itchingfield, Near Horsham.  The family have been there ever since.  They are the Burdfield branch of the family.  Others became Birdfield, Burford, Barford, and similar.

The Burdfield branch tree starts with William and Elizabeth (nee Feist).
